SUCC had a great round of competition taking victories in all matches except a nail-biting first grade…

In a thrilling match of first grade cricket on Saturday, a gutsy Sydney University nearly chased down Sutherland’s high score of 297 only to fall short by just 10 runs.

Uni’s two last batsman, Will Somerville and Nigel Cowell, enjoyed a striking 39-run last wicket partnership to almost get Uni over the line before Will Somerville was out for 54 with just with two balls remaining.  Just two sixes would have done the trick! Somerville’s final dash for victory included 4 fours and 4 sixes at an incredible strike rate of 200. It was a classy display from the in form all-rounder.  On the bowling front Darius Visser performed strongly finishing with figures of 3-56 and taking two catches. The narrow defeat leaves first grade in 11th place ahead of Round 11 against 17th placed Sydney.

Meanwhile, second, third, fourth and fifth grades all enjoyed solid wins over the weekend.

In the home game, second grade took a comfortable win over Sutherland with 10 overs to spare. Chasing Sutherland’s 173, Uni reached 3/174 in 40 overs. Adam Theobald and Steven Hobson rounded out the innings topping the batting both not out on 57 and 37 respectively. Ben Joy 4/40 and Joe Kershaw 2/5 bowled strongly.

Third grade Uni also tasted success defeating Sutherland by 48 runs in an eventful game. Batsman Alexander Shaw, Ben Larkin and Dugald Holloway (not out) notched 50, 27 and 26 runs respectively. Excellent bowling was seen by Lewis McMahon (4-23), Captain Ash Cowan (2-29) and Jack Holloway (2-5).

In Fourth grade Uni were also victorious thrashing the opposing Sutherland by 151 runs and earning a bonus point.  Having won the toss and batting first, Uni reached 6/257 and then dismissed Sutherland for 109 with 11 overs remaining. Jack Maddocks (64 not out), Suda Sivapalan (61), Ryan Danne (54), Joshua Richards (42) lead a strong batting side, while Ryan Kurtz (3/8), Josh Stewart (2/9), and Danne (2/26) headed a dominating attack.

In fifth grade, Uni defeated Sutherland by a resounding 125 runs at Tonkin Park. Having reached 7/352, Sutherland could only respond with 4/227 in the full 50 overs. Nicholas Arnold continued his fine form with a century (125) and Hayden Kerr notched 88 and also took 2/34. Other quality batting displays came from Kieren Tate (44), Jarrod Waterlow (30), Matt Lowen (25).

In the Metro Cup on Sunday, Sydney Uni defeated North Sydney passing North Sydney’s total of 106 and reaching 5/109 with 3 overs to spare. Strong bowling was seen from captain Harris de Kretser (3/6), Andrew Wilkinson (3/13) and Eoin Liehr (2/12).

A widely successful round of cricket for SUCC sees the boys confident and in good stead ahead of this weekends’ Round 11 against Sydney. We hope all teams can get up and bring home some more good results.
