Strong Showings on Day 1

In the first 2-day fixture of the season Sydney Uni faced off against Easts and are poised for another successful round across the grades.

At University Oval No. 1, 1st Grade were in the field after Easts won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that promised an even contest. Easts’ patient opening stand of 65 was broken by Devlin Malone, who continued his form with the ball to remove Easts’ top 4 and finish with figures of 6-73 from his 27 overs. Tight bowling from Sydney Uni restricted the flow of runs and saw wickets fall at regular intervals, ensuring no Easts batsman passed 50. Ben Joy swooped to clean up the tail and bowl Easts out for 215. With 22 overs to negotiate, Sydney Uni lost 3 wickets and are currently 3/44 with Ben Trevor-Jones and Liam Robertson not out on 27 and 0 respectively.

With Waverley unavailable, 2nd Grade primed themselves for a long day in the field after Easts elected to bat on the fast outfield and flat wicket offered by Trumper Park. An early wicket each to Charlie Cassel and Kieran Tate saw Easts’ top and middle consolidate to build several 50+ partnerships, eventually finishing the day 7/290. With an early, if not immediate, declaration looming for next Saturday, 2nd Grade’s batsmen will be put through their first real test of the season to chase down a sizeable total.

Despite losing their Round 1 centurion to 1st Grade, 3s continued their form with the bat to post 293 on Day 1. Jack Hill was circumspect and assured as he passed 50 and closed in on a century, only to be stopped short on 92. Hayden Storey however, managed to negotiate the nineties and was free-flowing in amassing his first 3rd grade century – acknowledging both the support of his teammates and those at the Toxteth Hotel in his celebration (setting the standard for sponsor appreciation in the process).

A wicket to Murray Watts on the first ball of the day put 4th Grade in a strong position early. However, like all grade wickets that ‘do a bit early’, the wicket flattened, and Easts capitalised to finish the day 8/276. All bowlers contributed – Aidan Peek led the pack with 2 wickets and Tom Fullerton, Sanjay Anandarajah, Shehan Canagasingham and Murray Watts each claimed 1.

An opening stand of 80 by Liam Coelho (44) and Will Masojada (60) as well as a decisive innings by number 3, Zohirul Islam (72), promised a dominant day for 5th Grade at St Paul’s Oval. However, Easts regained control with a flurry of wickets that saw Sydney Uni bowled out for 256 in the 74th over. The Students made the most of their last 4 overs, with Tom Hill claiming a wicket – and another opening batsman’s Saturday – to place Easts on a precarious 1/8 at the close of business.

With all 5 games in the balance (if not in the Students’ favour), expect big performances and tight finishes to come next Saturday.

Meet the PG’s Coach: Tim Carter

While addressed generally in the Club’s welcome, we thought it prudent, in the week preceding the opening round of the Poidevin-Gray competition, to have a get-to-know-you with Sydney Uni’s new PG’s Coach (and the Senior Club’s Assistant Coach), Tim Carter.

We asked Tim some quickfire questions to get the ball rolling.

What is a personal cricket highlight of yours (playing or coaching)?

“Coaching Samoa’s National Men’s Team and seeing each of the players improve each tournament.”

What are you most excited about for this season with SUCC?

“Being involved with a professional club with great facilities. There are some very talented and, as important, coachable young cricketers at Sydney Uni Cricket Club.”

Any coaching philosophies/mantras?

“I ask all the players I work with to be coachable, ask lots of questions and be open to questioning and feedback.”

Pre-game soundtrack: “Anything by AC/DC.”

Nashball Position: Goalkeeper and occasional running back (off the record).

Tim’s impact has already been felt in his contribution to the pre-game warm up and talk at 2nd Grade games as well as in the composure, insight and awareness he brings to individual discussions with players. We wish him and the PG’s squad the best of luck this season.

The PG’s Squad will have a centre-wicket session this Thursday at St Andrew’s from 4pm, as they prepare for their opening T20 against Bankstown (at Bankstown Oval) on Sunday at 10.00AM.

The Spirit of Cricket lives on

The Spirit of Cricket lives on

It was a seemingly insignificant gesture, with a large impact.

It won't be recorded in any scorebook. Perhaps not many will even remember it on an afternoon when 13 wickets fell for 259 runs.

But in this gesture, the way we play the game and the reason we play the game come to life.

At 4 for 165, for half an hour, Easts had battled relentlessly skillful bowling from Tim Ley at the grandstand end and Devlin Malone at the southern end. You sensed that a crucial moment was coming.

Devlin already had 4 wickets on an afternoon that was to bring him 6 and take him past 100 for the Club. He spins up a dropping, turning, tantalising leg break. An edge to slip where Liam Robertson scoops the catch low to the ground. A quiet appeal. The umpire raises his finger in judgement.

But...what's this? Liam signals no catch. He caught it just after it bounced. The Easts batsman may have turned in thanks. The umpire rescinds his decision.

The game goes on.

But it doesn't just go on.

It's illuminated by one magic gesture of honesty and clarity.

The spirit of this great game lives on.

James Rodgers

What it means to play for Sydney University

What it means to play for Sydney University

Those lucky enough to attend the 2018-19 Season Launch, were fortunate to listen to a passionate address by Sydney Uni Cricket legend, James Rodgers. His speech went as follows:

“You may never have heard of JOHN FULLER. He lived into his eighties and he used to wander down to No 1 Oval on Saturdays to watch the games of cricket and Rugby from under the trees.

He was a first year Med student in 1939 when he played as a backrower in the University 1st Grade Rugby Premiership side.

By 1940, at the beginning of the war, he’d enlisted in the army.

In 1942, he was among thousands of Australian soldiers captured by the Japanese in Singapore. For the next three and a half years, he was a prisoner of war…starved, beaten, subjected to unimaginably sadistic torture. When he was asked how he survived those awful years, he said that he had taken in his kitbag to Singapore his Sydney University 1st Grade Rugby Premiership jersey and every night that he was a prisoner of war, until it fell apart, he slept in that jersey to keep his spirits up.

There’s a happy ending to this story. He survived, came back in 1946 to play once again for his beloved Sydney University, represented the Wallabies, and then lived for another 60 years, sustained during his darkest times by just wearing the famous blue and gold jersey.

The second story is not as spectacular.

But…this cap. Of all the things that I’ve ever got from playing cricket, this is my most treasured. It says ‘SUCC. Club Champions, 2000-01’.

Even though this club had been going for almost 150 years in 2001, we had never before won the title ‘Club Champions’ until that year

On the final afternoon, the news crackled around the grounds. We needed two of our teams to win and I was in the field up at St Paul’s Oval when I heard that 1st and 3rd Grades had won. We also went on to win and the celebrations on the outfield at No 1 Oval that night went on for so long into the next week that we lost all four games in the next weekend’s quarter finals.

However, for the last ten years of my career, I always wore this cap in every game, so much did it mean to me, a symbol of playing not just for ourselves or even just for our team, but for the whole club. I’ve won Premiership caps and I’ve even kept my first cap but this is the one that I always wore. It’s a symbol of what this club is about. It’s more than just writing and cardboard and cloth.

It stands for integrity, for spirit and soul and passion in your heart.

It stands for pride in all that we do on and off the field.

It stands for how we play the game and you’ve already heard how many times we’ve won the ‘spirit of cricket’ award in recent times.

It stands for confidence in the way we play.

It stands for respect for ourselves, for our team mates, for our club mates, for our opposition, for the umpires, for the game.

It stands for achievement. Look at how many in this room have played in premierships/club championships for this club.

It stands for enjoyment, and fun and mate ship with others that will last much longer than just our playing career

It stands as the link with our long traditions, with everyone who’s gone before us and everyone who will follow us.

If you’re here for the first time (as are our Green Shield boys and their families), it won’t be the last time.

And if you first played here 40, 50, 60 years ago as did some of those distinguished former players here tonight, then you know what I’m talking about.

Because….that’s what it means to play for this great club!

Bradman Scholar 2018

This week we’re going to start off with something we missed earlier in the year (though we can’t be faulted as he technically hadn’t joined the Club at the time it was announced).

V George - J Howard - Bradman Scholar 2018.jpg

Sydney Uni Cricket fresher, Varun George, joined a long list of Sydney Uni Cricket players to be awarded the Bradman Scholarship which was announced in May this year.

The Bachelor of Commerce student at University of Sydney, demonstrated an outstanding blend of academic, sporting, personal and social skills to be awarded the coveted scholarship for 2018.

Aside from his outstanding cricketing talents, Varun is also a member of the Sydney Uni Hockey Club’s EAP squad, a black belt in karate, and a keen participant in the SU Drama Society. He rounds off his interests by also volunteering with the Anglican Retirement Village in Forestville and with the Smith Family reading program.

Varun joins former & current players Geoff Lovell, Andrew Ridley, Greg Mail, Mark Faraday, Dave Miller and Tom Galvin, as well as Board Member and Australian cricket legend, Alex Blackwell, as a Bradman Scholar.

We felt this a timely ICYMI as we introduce Varun as our new ICYMI columnist for 2018.

Clean Sweep in Round 1

Club Champs - R1.jpg

Opening the 2018-19 season against reigning club champions, Manly-Warringah DCC, promised to be a good test of Sydney Uni’s pre-season efforts. Thankfully, the toil of Sydney Uni coaches and players alike came to fruition in the form of a clean sweep across all five premier grades, seeing Sydney Uni patrons wake up to a pleasing sight on Sunday morning.

Wins in all five premier grades, with 1s, 2s, and 4s securing bonus point wins  places the Students atop the Club Championship Ladder (the cherry: being a duck egg for last season’s Club Champs). If first impressions last, this bodes well for the season ahead.

1st Grade were clinical in their 144 run victory at University No. 1. Ed Cowan (69 from 57) joined the list of former Test cricketers to top-score for their club and was supported well by Liam Robertson (50 from 51) and Ryan McElduff, who amassed 63 from 64 – his highest score in 1st Grade and a timely performance before he represents Metro Thunder at the NSW Under 19 State Challenge next month. Devlin Malone was the pick of the bowlers with 4-35 from his 9 overs.

Despite an early collapse, 2nd Grade made light work of Manly’s 97. After Dugald Holloway opened the game with 2 wickets in his first 2 overs, Manly were unable to get going and wickets fell at regular intervals. Ben Trevor-Jones and Alex Shaw showed class in securing victory – both finishing 39 not out in a 5-wicket win.

In his debut for Sydney University, Nihir Gandhi took 4-35 to help restrict Manly to 213 – a 52-run victory for 3rd Grade initially set up by Steve Hobson, who posted the first century of the season with 122.

In a strong bowling performance, 4th Grade secured a 5 wicket win with all bowlers claiming a wicket and Canagasingham, Toyer, Anandarajah and Frost finishing with 2 each.

5th Grade were perhaps the standout in their chase of Manly’s formidable 279. Fresh off a successful campaign for Sydney Uni Hockey Club, Club Captain Vince Umbers reached 50 along with Lewis Ansell (65), supported by Cullen Hathurusinghe (30), to secure victory with 3-balls to spare.

Congratulations to all grades on such a strong start to the season!

Uni Army on song early

Fresh (somewhat) off celebrations from their first wins of the season, the committed few of the SUCC Army ventured to North Sydney Oval on Sunday to see NSW take on Victoria in the JLT cup. United in spirit but not in dress, the crew was spotted early by Fox Sports’ Brendon Julian who dubbed the “the prawn” as the groom at the centre of the fun.

Keep an eye out for their next appearance.
