ROUND 12 SHAPING UP AS THRILLER

A stirring weekend of cricket has set the scene for interesting Day 2's across all grades as Round 12 of the Sydney Grade Cricket Competition against St George continues this weekend.

In first grade St George won the toss and elected to bowl. Sydney University made their way out to the crease and put 233 runs on the board over the day in 87.5 overs. Down the order Jonte Pattison (82 off 156) and gloveman Ben Trevor-Jones (57 off 147) were the pick of the batsman with mature innings' defying their young years. They saved the day with a 122-run partnership following an early collapse for SUCC. Skipper, Greg Mail, also added 22 off 66. St George bowler Eric Denhartog finished with a marvellous 5/50, and took the early wickets of openers Will Hay (6) and Mark Faraday (10). With six overs left to play St George got off the mark and finished the day with 0/15. St George will resume trailing by 218 with 10 wickets in hand.

In second grade at Hurstville Oval Sydney University won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Ben Larkin lasted just 10 minutes before he was clean bowled by Luke Stanton (4-27) for a duck. However, Sydney University pressed on and compiled 176 runs (all out) in 70.5 overs. Middle-order batsman (captain) Tom Kierath (37), James Larkin (34), Darius Visser (31) and Jack Hill (30) all made solid batting contributions. St George's chase began unfavourably as opener Daniel Arafu was caught out for a duck on his second ball faced. St George managed to finish the day with 3/69 (off 24 overs) as Sydney University's bowler Dugald Holloway picked up the wickets of Matthew Baden and Brent Atherton late in the day. Holloway's 2/15 off 8 overs included 2 maidens.

In third grade St George won the toss and elected to bowl. Sydney University started strongly with the bat to make 8/206 off 80 overs. Captain Ash Cowan (62), Jack Maddocks (37), and Henry Clark (32) all displayed patient and disciplined batting to help amass the runs. Sydney University resume out in the middle on Saturday with the chance to further their run total.

Over in fourth grade, Sydney University won the toss and elected to bowl. St George started well making 10/224 off 77.4 overs with their skipper Andrew Pandelis scoring a century. With the ball Sydney University performed strongly with Jonathan Craig Dobson (3/25), Will Clayton (2/28), Kieran Tate (2/41) and Nicholas Powys (2/65) all picking up valuable wickets. Sydney University have a solid total to chase when they take to the bat on Saturday.

At St Paul's College in fifth grade, St George won the toss and elected to bowl. Despite Sydney University opener Liam Carfax being dismissed for a duck, Alex Mihalyha (48 off 55), Douglas Rogers (38), Hugh Kermond (38) and Jarrod Waterlow (25 off 36) all cashed in runs to leave their side all out for 198 in 68.5 overs. St George began their innings in good touch and finished the day on 0/12 from 9 overs. Alex Milhayla and Nik Dale opened the bowling for Sydney University.

Finally, in the Triforce Sports Metropolitan Cup, Penrith won the toss and elected to bowl. Sydney University enjoyed the running in the first session making 164 off 59.1 overs. Cameron New (48), Andrew Wilkinson (31) and Bradley Burns (31) were the top scorers. Burns capped off a great day with bowling stats of 2/5 including 2 maidens to spark an early collapse as Penrith were left for 3/42 at stumps.

SUCC will train this week ahead of Day 2 of Round 12 on Saturday February 14 where they will be hoping to produce some good back end form against challengers St George.

CHANGES APLENTY AND CRUCIAL ROUND FOR SUCC

By Georgina Pembroke.

The re-commencement of the Sheffield Shield this weekend has limited SUCC of some key players, but this round will instead give SUCC's depth a keen test.

There are some big changes to the sides ahead of SUCC's clash with St George in Round 12 of the Sydney Grade Cricket Competition this Saturday February 7 and Saturday February 14.

Milestone reaching batsman, Greg Mail will captain first grade in their contest against the 13th placed St George; a team boasting former Australian Test bowler, Trent Copeland. Mail will be joined by the likes of NSW representatives Will Somerville and Tim Ley, as well as Liam Robertson, Mark Faraday, Jonte Pattison and Ben Joy.

The inclusion of off-spinner Somerville will be a welcome boost. Somerville dominated the bowling, building considerable pressure, to take nine wickets in NSW Second XI's crushing 8-wicket win over the Victorian Second XI in Melbourne this week.

A handful of experienced  grade players will also step up to the mark and ply their trade in first grade. Openers Will Hay and David Miller, Adam Theobald, who scored 63 last weekend, and youngster Ben Trevor-Jones, who will take to the gloves. Fast bowler Nigel Cowell has also been included should he recover from injury in time.

Mail, and coach Gary Whitaker, have named a very good line up for this match and there will be lots of anticipation to see what this team can do in this 2-day match.

This showdown between two powerhouses of SCG has the holders of the previous seven Belvidere Cups up against each other, with St George having claimed four 1st grade premierships and SUCC three since the 2007/08 season.

First grade are currently ranked ninth on the ladder with 30 points and have three places to climb to reach the top six. Needless to say the boys will be chasing a comprehensive win to bring them one step closer to a finals berth! Manly-Warringah sit on top of the table with 56 points, with Bankstown (52 points) second and Mosman (42 points) third.

Second Grade continue to lead the Abert Cup with unchallenged superiority 10 points ahead of the rest of the pack. This team is in ‘tip-top’ condition and a few alterations to their line-up should cause little trouble as they take on their equivalent (ranked sixth) at Hurstville Oval.

Third grade, currently in eighth place with 36 points, will wear their hearts on their sleeves as they face the seventh placed St George (37 points) in what will be a tight contest at Allan Davidson Oval. Both teams will be competitive and pushing to eclipse one another to make the top six.

Fourth grade is well in the mix firmly well entrenched in second place with 48 points. We can expect a hard fought match from them in their clash against St George (seventh place with 37 points) at Harold Fraser Reserve.

Fifth grade are currently ranked fifth on their ladder with 38 points and are being closely followed by St George who are in eighth place with 36 points. Endowed with a home game, they will be looking to keep their finals hopes alive with a satisfying victory.

Meanwhile in the Triforce Sports Metropolitan Cup, Sydney University come up against ladder leaders Penrith in what is bound to be a cracking top-of-the-table match. Sydney University is comfortably placed in second place behind Penrith and both teams have shown fantastic form this season.

SUCC are running off a clean sweep from last weekend and hopes are high for all SUCC grades to prove themselves finals worthy as the business end of the season approaches.

SUCC CLAIMS 3RD CLEAN SWEEP

By Georgina Pembroke.

SUCC came home with wins across all grades over the weekend and as a result saw improved standings on all ladders, and claimed the Nags Head 'Clean Sweep Jugs' for Round 11.

In the McDonald’s Sydney First Grade Competition, a confident Sydney University outfit narrowly missed out on a much needed outright win in their 2-day match against Sydney. Uni won the toss and with a top 5 brimming with domestic cricket experience, elected to bat. In a strong batting show, Ryan Carters notched 56, Scott Henry reached 96, just shy of another century, and Greg Mail finished on an unbeaten 138. Sean Abbott (28) and Nick Larkin (19) also made starts. Reaching another milestone, Mail hit his 41st century taking him to 14,098 runs, making him the first player to reach the 14,000 run-mark. Uni declared at 4/359 after 80 overs before Sydney came to the crease and lost a quick wicket before stumps on Day 1.

Left with a somewhat daunting task of cracking the university men’s total, Sydney lacked the edge and fell for a dogged 197 from 68.2 overs, before being reduced to 8/126 off 42.5 overs in Uni's desperate attempt at maximum points. In the bowling department, colourful NSW paceman Sean Abbott caused headaches taking 5/40 & 1/19, while B Joy 1/18 & 3/27 and Will Sommerville 1/37 & 2/30 added helpful contributions. Timothy Ley (1/11) snared the important wicket of Sydney’s first innings centurion, Anthony Mosca, to give Uni a chance at the outright. Sydney University’s fielding was also second-to-none with Carters, Mail, Larkin, Joy, Henry and Robertson all taking catches.

Second grade Sydney University produced another performance likely of competition leaders defeating their Sydney equivalent by 4 wickets. Sydney was bundled out in the 49th over for a reachable 199 through the bowling of Tom Kierath (3/36), Dugald Holloway (3/37), and David Miller (2/29). Sydney University then arrived out in the middle and managed 6/201, completing the run chase with 4 wickets and 2 overs to spare. Max Hope with a classy unbeaten 91 and Adam Theobald (62) were the standouts with the bat.

Sydney University was also successful in third grade beating Sydney by 10 runs at home at St Paul’s College. Sydney University batted first and made a solid 6/213 in a complete 50 overs. Opener Ben Larkin (42) set up the team with the bat, and Alexander Shaw (48), James Crowley (31) and Ash Cowan (28) all followed with good scores. Sydney responded with 203 before they were cleaned up in the 49th over of their innings as Lewis McMahon (4/29), Ash Cowan (2/43) and Henry Clark (2/43) got the job done to seal the win.

Out at Ryde Oval, Sydney University also snatched victory in fourth grade defeating Sydney by a mere 6 runs. Uni got the ball rolling making a controlled 7/249 in 50 overs. Suda Sivapalan and Joshua Richards stepped into the spotlight hitting a blistering 78 from 99 balls and 69 from 97 respectively, while Jack Maddocks (45) posted a hefty contribution to the total. Sydney’s chase began poorly but they redeemed themselves to finish with 9/243 just 6 runs short of Uni’s 249. Will Clayton held the pick of the bowlers taking 3/56. Sydney University were just too good on the day and now lie in second place on the ladder ahead of Sydney who sit in a close third.

Fifth grade enjoyed a massive win ousting their Sydney opponent by 106 runs. Sydney University made 6/296 as the middle order of Hayden Kerr (72), Matt Lowen (65) and Jarrod Waterlow (40) batted strongly. Captain Michael Harris also made an unbeaten 26. Sydney University then inflicted pain on Sydney by bowling them all out for 190 in 48.3 overs. Liam Whitaker (4/50), Toby Wheeler (2/27) and Nick Powys (2/41) proved invaluable with the ball.

Finally, in the Triforce Sports Metropolitan Cup, Sydney University defeated Randwick Petersham Green by 4 wickets. Sydney University reduced Randwick to 105 runs in 38 overs and then overpowered their opponents with 6/106 in 27 overs. Captain Harris De Kretser (3/23) and Andrew M Wilkinson (3/25) lead the bowling attack, while youngster, Kobe Carroll top scored with 20 not out.

All in all it was a huge performance all round for SUCC and there are plenty of positive signs ahead of this week's Round 12 against St George.

Remember that this round sees the annual clash for the O'Keeffe - O'Sullivan Trophy between our first grade sides with a lunch function to be held on Saturday 14th February for supporters and friends of both clubs and more importantly, both club legends. The Nag's Head has also promised to supply the clean sweep jugs following this weekend's play at 7:45pm sharp.

RETURN TO 2-DAY CRICKET, 5 ROUNDS TO GO!

This weekend sees Sydney University meet Sydney in Round 11 of the Sydney Grade Cricket Competition. First grade has the home game in a 2-Day affair, while second, third, fourth and fifth grades will play at Drummoyne Oval, St Paul’s College, Ryde Oval and Kensington Oval respectively.

With the McDonald's First Grade Limited-Overs Competition now taking a break until the Qualifying Finals on February 15, first grade still have some gains to make to live up to their fine record as reigning premiers, 2010/2011 premiers and 2011/2012 premiers. Currently placed 11th on 24 points, Uni will be after an emphatic win against the 17th place Sydney as they look to make a late surge with five rounds to go before the qualifying finals on March 21.

Second grade continue in a fashionable lead in first place on 51 points ahead of Northern Districts (41 points). Lining up against the 11th placed Sydney (28 points), the premiers of a spectacular three previous seasons will be confident to go out and solidify their dominance once again.

A win will also be welcomed in third grade when they, currently in 8th place on 30 points, take on their Sydney equivalent (20th place on 6 points). We can also be confident that fifth grade (in 5th place on 32 points) can secure a win against Sydney who sit in 15th place on 18 points.

It’s poised to be a close and exciting fourth grade contest down at Ryde Oval when the well-performing Uni (2nd place, 42 points) battle it out with Sydney (also on 42 points). Both teams will be eager for the win and have ladder leaders Manly-Warringah (48 points) in their sights.

In the Triforce Sports Metropolitan Cup, reigning premiers Sydney University will take on Randwick Petersham Green at Alexandria Park on Saturday. Uni are ranked 2nd on 46 points trailing Penrith on 62 points, while Randwick Petersham Green sit down the ladder in 6th place on 24 points.

It will be another full weekend of cricket and SUCC will be out on the ovals to leave winning marks across the board in Round 11.
