Messages from sponsors and supporters

In the wake of a trio of premierships and the Club Championship, SUCC has continued to receive messages of congratulations and support. Below are such messages from club sponsor Kingsgrove Sports; Brian Hickey, who our PG's player of the season award is named after; and the Sydney Uni Australian National Football Club.

Thanks to these guys and others who have shown tremendous support of the club, without you we would not be the club we are today.

Dear Gary, David & Adam

It is with absolute pleasure that I take this opportunity to congratulate Sydney University 1st, 2nd & 6th Grades in winning the Sydney competition.

As a sponsor of SUCC for several years now, we are thrilled for the Club and all its members and players. Your Club is a sponsors’ dream and Kingsgrove Sports is very pleased with our association with your Club and players.

I look forward to personally congratulating the teams in the near future at the presentation.

Kind regards

Harry Solomons

Dear James

Another great season for SUCC

Kindest regards
Brian Hickey

Dear James and Bruce,

On behalf of all at SUANFC, congratulations on the Cricket Club 2013/14 GF victory.

Given the recent passing of Mike O'Sullivan, I guess this year will have had special meaning. I am sure he'd be very proud.

After all the work that is put into a season, you both must be ecstatic.

Congratulations.

Chas Wilkinson
President, SUANFC

A message from Mike Coward to SUCC

Dear James,

Regrettably I won’t be able to attend the Grand Final at Hurstville Oval as I will be in Adelaide trying to get the Swans on to the board after such a poor start. It has been an outstanding season for University and best wishes to you and all concerned for the finals. Certainly a wonderful way to begin the 150th celebrations. Good luck.

Kind regards

Mike

Abbott wins Steve Waugh Medal

NSW and SUCC allrounder Sean Abbott was awarded the Steve Waugh Medal for 2013/14 on Friday evening. Abbott (22) topped the wicket tally in the Ryobi Cup competition with 16 scalps and claimed a further 27 wickets in the Sheffield Shield campaign. He also calimed Ryobi Cup player of the Year for his fine allround efforts.

The most prized award in NSW Cricket is decided by a 3-2-1 voting system by players at the end of each one day, or 4 day fixture for NSW. Abbott's consitent contributions resulted in a total of 169 votes, 8 clear of Steve Smith (161) and 36 clear of Ryan Carters (133). An amazing achievement and all at SUCC applaud Sean for his efforts.

Ryan Carters didn't leave the night empty handed either! Capping off an amazing move to NSW from Victoria, Carters was voted the Bupa Sheffield Shield Player of the Year. His 861 runs at 53.81 has confirmed he is one of Australia's most promising opening batsmen.

Well done to both guys, we look forward to seeing you in action this weekend for SUCC!

Let's make it a season to remember

Success in 1's, 2's and 6's over the weekend will see SUCC contest three grandfinals. Another set of solid performances will ice the cake that has been the 2013/14 season.

In first grade, a lower order fight back from Will Sommerville and Nigel Cowell, backed up by another stellar effort from the fast bowlers Cowell, Abbot and Ley set up an emphatic victory over Randwick Petersham. Sommerville looked right at home batting at Sydney's most Eastern cricket ground, driving and lofting his way to 63 not out from the number 10 position, and in doing so more than doubling his season aggregate of runs. The pair added 78 for the final wicket, which swung the momentum in our favour. The bowlers finished the job, knocking over Randy Pete's for 77 in reply.

Second grade proved again why they will be gunning for their third straight premiership straight (and fifth in seven years). Keirath's men worked hard to amass 255, with contributions all the way down the list. Ben Joy was then let loose on the Saints batting line up, claiming 7/39 off 23.4 overs. The lanky quick now has 56 wickets at a miserly 13.57 for the season. Saints, despite a significant 10th wicket partnership, capitulated for 175 in reply.

Third grade finally met their match in Sydney Cricket Club, who chased our 197 for the loss of just three wickets. 45 from Ed Arnott was the highlight of the batting performance, while Lewis McMahon capped a fine debut season taking 1/47 to take his overall tally to an outstanding 47 wickets. A great season by Ash Cowan's young brigade, who will no doubt make their presence felt as the Uni Army next weekend.

Mike Harris has also led our 6th grade team to a grandfinal. The boys downed Gordon in their semi final, and will now take on Blacktown for the right to lift the Metropolitan Cup.

Well done to all involved. One more weekend of hard toil to make it a season to remember.

Win (preferable), lose or draw (in which case 2's win anyway) celebrations will be held at The Nag's Head Hotel Sunday evening.

From the Chairman

TAILENDERS

SCORERS

GROUNDSTAFF

How did we get this far?

1st, 2nd and 6th Grades all play for Premierships this weekend.

Many deserve plaudits for getting us into this enviable position of strength.

But this week, let’s spare a moment of gratitude for:

THE TAILENDERS

It’s a sign that things are going well for a team when the tail bats with pride and character and steely resolve. And so it was in 1st Grade on Saturday. Will Somerville and Nigel Cowell took us from a teetering 9-101 to 179 in an inspirational last wicket stand of 96 minutes’ worth of studious defence and selective shots. This contributed decisively to our win.

And, in 2nds, Tom Kierath, Josh Toyer and Ben Joy combined to push us over 250. The innings lasted another two hours from the time TK came in at 7 for 182.

And, in 3rds, Kerrod McPherson and Lewis McMahon added 26 for the last wicket.

This was character, resilience, belief!

THE SCORERS

John Kilford, Les Carrington and Alex Clark all live and breathe every ball and they have been an intricate part of 1sts, 2nds and 3rds many triumphs this season, as much as anyone on the field.

THE GROUNDSTAFF

Ray and his men performed miracles on the weekend after a week of rain. Both no 1 and no 2 looked magnificent. The pitches were amazingly true and consistent. It was the men’s pride in their work and in the presentation of the University grounds that drew much deserved praise.

Outstanding!

NOW…

Let’s get along in force to the 1st, 2nd and 6th Grade Finals this weekend

AND…

Book your place for 12 April. We’ll have big things to celebrate.
