Weekly wrap from Phelpsy.

Sydney University Cricket Club headed into Round 6 of the Grade Competition against one of the powerhouse clubs - Bankstown DCC.

The games would be an ideal relief for most players who have been busy cramming for end of semester exams and for the rest a welcome chance to play some more cricket after the club’s exploits at hosting the inaugural Twenty/20 competition last weekend.

Bankstown won the toss on a very flat University No.1 wicket and after being 3/16 post a very strong total of 8/334. Nick Dunford, Tim Ley and Mitch Cook all took 2 wickets a piece but again dropped catches cost the team dearly. A strong batting performance from the students awaits!

Club stalwart David Butchart provided the backbone to a competitive total of 238 by the students in 2nd grade on a well grassed Bankstown Oval wicket. Butch scored 115 and was well supported by Scottish import Richie Berrington (34) and Josh Toyer (24). Toyer was devastating with the ball taking 1/6 to have Bankstown 1/12 at the close.

The 3rd Grade team continued to fight hard and posted a solid total of 262. Mark Hackett top scored with 66 but was supported by James Walsh (63), Huw McKay (42) and Brendan Smith (30no). Bankstown finished the day no wicket for 7 runs.

Again another team total with most players contributing to the total of 247 in 4th grade. Skipper Matt Skinner top scored with 65 with debutant Dougal Robinson (59), Pete Jordan (47) and Josh Lawrence (34) providing great support. Bankstown finished the day at 1/24.

The students are in a commanding position in 5th grade after bowling out Bankstown for 135. Greg Metcalfe and Steven Green were the destroyers with 4 and 2 wickets a piece. The highlight of the day saw SUCC legend James Rodgers take his 850th grade wicket. Stats that most mere mortals would only dream about. Congratulations to James on another great record and the ensuing accolades. Who will be his 1000 wicket?

The Poidevin-Gray team continued on their merry way on Sunday with a win over Manly at University No.1 oval. Uni won the toss and posted 244 with Nick Larkin smashing 108 to continue his form and David Miller (47) contributed to the total. Manly came close finishing at 7/217 with Tim Ley finishing a solid days cricket with 4/37 to go with his 27 runs.

A solid weekend from the students but we will have to drag every bit of energy and mental toughness to overcome an opposition club that strives on a contest.

The Poidevin-Gray boys have a top of the table clash with Blacktown this Sunday at Joe McAleer Oval, Blacktown.

James Rodgers takes 850 wickets for SUCC

A gentleman of the sport, James Rodgers has surpassed many in the club with a massive 850 wickets. Some would argue that given his age, it is not that great an achievement, one or two wickets a season would have done it.

All joking aside, James has lead by example with his tenacity and dedication both spinning the ball to 850 batsmen's demise as well as off the pitch with his commitment to the club and also the foundation. It could be said that the 5th grade team is owned by James, he could easily play up a few grades but he has a passion for nurturing the younger players as they advance from Green shield into grade cricket and also an understanding shoulder to lean on as the older players are displaced in the higher grades by the young stars he has helped to promote.

SUCC has been richly reward by having James as a member, player and supporter.

Metroman bags 200 wickets

Greg Metcalfe picked up his 200th SUCC grade wicket last Saturday at St.Pauls oval. Greg has been a well known member of the club for many years. Originally from the Blue Mountains, Greg made SUCC his home team and has always been a quiet achiever. Greg was talking of his captains 850 wickets on the weekend and only "confessed" his own landmark of 200 when reminded by a team mate. "Oh yeah, I took my 200th as well".

Well done Greg, we know that you will beat Jimmy's total in the years to come.

Nick Larkin adds 108 runs to PG's game.

Nick and his brother Ben opened the batting against Manly in the PG's match at Sydney University number 1 last Sunday, 16th November. Ben managed a total of 18 before returning to the sheds. Nick had higher thoughts in his mind and opened the face of his bat up to the Manly attack. Nick passed the ton and looked set to stay in front of the stumps for the remainder of the innings. Picture shows Nick on his way to a century.

Butch smashes impressive 115 against Bankstown.

2nd grade player Dave Butchart AKA angriest man in cricket, punished the Bankstown bowlers on their home ground last Saturday, 15th November, belting out 115 runs, just under half of the teams tally.

Apologies to anyone who read this during Monday, Danny and Dave included. Danny Ward is in fact the captain of 2nd grade, Butch was captain last year.

SUCC City and Suburban shine against Radiophysics

Am I reading this correctly, who in thunder and tarnation are City and Suburban?

There is a little known corner of SUCC where people who want a game of cricket without pressure to perform week in and week out has existed for quite some time. Our source told us that he had his first game in this competition and as Geoff (sorry, shouldn't have divulged that name) is older than God, that in itself must tell you this comp for retiring and new players alike has been around for eons.

Starting time for this team was around 2.00pm on number 2 oval, slight delay due to a team photo (mainly to prove that they exist) and then, into the fray. Travis McKenna from Green Shield showed that the club has talent to burn waiting in the wings.

NSW U19 CAPTAIN

Sydney University’s Dave Miller Dave Millerhas become the U19 NSW Captain for this year’s National Championships, to be held in Newcastle from 8th-19th December 2008. Dave’s selection in NSW U19, and indeed his role as captain, has put him into an elite club of players to have done so from Sydney University. He has shown great leadership and composure throughout the season so far and recently made his First Grade debut already scoring some crucial runs and is averaging 40.

Dave was 1 of 3 players to make the final trial game for NSW with Matt Morgan and Mitch Cook unlucky to not get picked. Matt scored 77 in the trial game but was unfortunately not enough to warrant being selected for the keeping spot. Matt and Mitch have also been involved in the First Grade team this year and have made substantial contributions.

We wish Dave good luck for the National Championships and look forward to more success from these promising players.

A big day for a big hearted man.

With a huge day in front of him, SUCC secretary Geoff de Mesquita rallied support from all corners of the club to help host the inaugural Sydney grade, Power Education Twenty20 matches held on Uni 1 and 2 ovals last Sunday. Being the micro manager that he is, Geoff BBQ' d, purchased supplies, helped in the kitchen (still not allowed to use the sharp knife), ferried drinks to number 2 oval, manned the canteens, used his best radio announcer's voice to keep the crowds updated with scores......the list is endless as was his energy. But as shocking as it may sound, as the last balls of the day were being delivered Geoff was caught by the camera, drifting off to some peaceful place behind his eyelids. It isn't known if he watches the Wiggles at all but it could be tempting to say "Wake up Geoff" next time you see him. Of course if you are the hundredth person to say it to him, you may want to dodge a left hook.

We are sure the club would join us in saying thank you not only to Geoff, but to all of the volunteers who put their hands up when the call went out.

Match reports.

The match reports are starting to filter through and are posted on the site as soon as they are received (look for and click on "match reports" in the nav column on the left). They are well worth the read as some of the scribes create their own dialect of the Queen's English. Terms such as "Nashball" are common and tend to rate in the report more than the events of the gentleman's game of cricket.

A note to the players who write the reports, please get them in early as there may be news about the match that the rest of the club would like to know about, Ben Joy's 10/42 being a good example.
