SUCC FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER No 2 2005-06
1. THE CLUB’S SEASON 2005-06
Success was more individual than collective during the season just finished. 3rd,4th and 6th Grade did contest the finals series but non could go further than the semi finals. It is a measure of current high expectations when there can be disappointment following a season without premierships or Club Championship flags to show off.
Five current 1st Graders did, however, represent at higher levels. Stuart Clark made his Test debut in South Africa; Stuart MacGill continued his stunning success at Test level. Indeed, when the two Stuarts stepped on the field together in Australian colours for the first Test against Bangladesh in April this year, it was the first time in 120 years that two current Sydney University cricketers had played together in the same Test. Tom Garrett and Sam Jones had played together against England in the 1880s. Greg Mail and Matthew Phelps continued their grand service to NSW Cricket with significant 1st class performances and Ian Moran won his first State colours in the inter-state 20/20 competition
Each contributed markedly to the Club in 1st Grade, in necessarily limited appearances. Stuart Clark batted once for 47 not out and took a remarkable nine wickets for 53 in two games. Stuart MacGill’s 17 wickets at 12.2 included a dominant 7-31 against Penrith. Matt Phelps scored 662 runs at 55.17; Greg Mail 963 at 87.55; Ian Moran 742 at 40.93 and took 38 wickets at 22.66. Phelps and Mail broke all sorts of records with their unbeaten 2nd wicket partnership of 390 against Mosman when they both scored double centuries. Not surprisingly Ian Moran won most Club awards and quite deservedly was awarded the O’Reilly Medal for the best and fairest 1st Grade cricketer from all clubs. Only John Grimble and John Saint had previously won this prestigious award while playing for Sydney University.
PORTRAIT OF A FOUNDATION MEMBER – IAN FISHER
Ian Fisher’s story is quite remarkable.
As an Engineering undergraduate he turned up for University’s pre season practice with an imposing record in junior cricket in Grafton and abundant natural athletic ability. The University selectors were unimpressed. He was not needed, not graded.
So, for over a decade, his cricket career blossomed elsewhere and he eventually captained the Sydney Club’s 1st Grade side and was much respected as a combative, aggressive left hander who could flay the best attacks in 1st Grade.
When University was searching for a 1st Grade captain in 1969-70, the approach was made to Ian to come back as graduate captain. He immediately brought a renewed sense of purpose and direction to University cricket. In successive seasons, on uncovered pitches, he hit 851, 713, 537 and 539 runs. He is still the Club’s greatest run scorer in 1st Grade and for his three clubs he scored 6731 1st Grade runs with 13 centuries
After retirement from playing, he served as a NSW selector for five seasons. But possibly his greatest service to the Club came when the Club most needed him. When the Club was threatened with demotion from the Grade competition in 1997, Fisher was at his uncompromising best. He was Chairman of Selectors and was the coach of the Club’s first Green Shield sides.
In 1999, Ian was elected as the Club’s eleventh Life Member and, in 2003 he became the Club’s twenty first President.
He has been a member of the Foundation for over 15 years.
OBITUARIES – Ivor McCristal
Born 1926, died 19 December 2005, aged 79
Ivor McCristal was one of the legendary figures of University cricket during the 1950s and 1960s.
He struggled in the lower grades for almost a decade before establishing himself in 1st Grade in spectacular fashion in 1957-58 when his 458 runs at 38.2 were the highest aggregate and average in 1st Grade that season.
His considerable experience served him admirably as captain of 2nd Grade from 1959-60. There he presided over the Club’s most successful seasons at that level. He led the side to the semi finals in 1960-61 and again in i961-62 and then to the premiership in 1962-63. This was University’sfirst premiership in any grade for over 50 years. Ivor also played as captain when John Everett was away in 1963-64 and 1964-65, two more premiership sides.
His final appearances for the Club were in 4th Grade in 1965-66, when he was aged almost 40, when he once again filled in as captain during the University vacation.
Ivor was a Vice President of the Club from 1957 and a Member of the Foundation.
VOLUNTARY STUDENT UNIONISM
Whatever side of politics you support, this issue will effect the University and its’ sporting clubs.
The following is taken largely from an article written by Graham Croker for ‘The Sydney Alumni Magazine’ of Autumn 2006.
The passing of the Federal Government’s Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) Bill in December was an unwelcome Christmas present for Sydney University Sport…
But despite the potential loss of over $3 million a year – from student sports fees – Sydney University Sport is confident that with the support of the University and the sporting alumni, the organization will continue to provide first rate facilities, coaching and sporting scholarships to its members, athletes, clubs, and the broader community…
Greg Harris said the loss of the funding at the University of Sydney could result in staffing cuts, a halt to capital works program, a reduction in club funding and sporting scholarships and the number of general sporting programs and services that SUS provides…
Bruce Ross said, “The future of sport at the University of Sydney is in the hands of the University and our sporting alumni. We are dependent upon the support for the current standards of sporting service and facilities at the University to be maintained.”
WE will survive but, more than ever, we need to call on the continued generosity of all our players, former players and supporters.
As always, a ‘Securing Our Future’ form in enclosed and, if you can make a contribution, please think of doing so in the above context.
‘SUMMERTIME BLUES’ – 150 years of Sydney University cricketers
The book has finally been written and published and was launched at the Club’s Annual Dinner in April this year. It features biographies of 50 characters who have made the Club so distinctive since 1854. There is at least one from each of the Club’s 16 decades. They’re not necessarily the best or the greatest but are possibly the most intriguing. There is a Pakistani prince, a Prime Minister, two leaders of the Australian Labour Party, a player who fought off a murderous gang of bushrangers, an Antarctic explorer, one killed in the air during World War II, a doctor murdered by one of his patients. They did things with style – from the Irishman who bowled underarm in University’s first ever match to the two future 1st Grade captains who were not even graded when they first tried out for the Club. There are the living legend – Alan Crompton, Mick Pawley, Mick O’Sullivan, Andrew Ridley, Imran Khan, John Grimble and Bruce Collins– and a taste of a rich future – Shane Stanton and Eddie Cowan… diverse personalities, covering 150 seasons, they all had one thing in common: they all played for the oldest club in New South Wales – Sydney University Cricket Club.
All profits from the book will go to the Foundation which is here to ensure the financial future of the Club and its players.

Ø has provided the Club with the strongest and most secure financial base of any Sydney Grade Club.
Ø has provided scholarships that have enabled some of Sydney’s most gifted young players to combine cricket and study.
Ø has supported the Club’s overseas tours in 1993, 1997, 2002 and again in 2004-05, and has supported intervarsity tours.
Ø has helped the Club upgrade its facilities and amenities (pitch covers, scoreboards, practice pitches, and, most recently, the purchase of a new fairway mower for No 1, No 2 and St Paul’s Ovals.
Ø has helped to fund coaching and administrative support for the Club.
And we are always going to need to continue our long history.
The Foundation capital is never spent. We spend only the interest and dividends received. Your donation will work for the Club in perpetuity.
