Week 1
It was encouraging to rock up to the old kings ground and see a deck that was good to go after two shambolic weeks at Drummoyne. O-week had left a few of the students sprinkled throughout the grades feeling somewhat worse for wear as Saturday morning rolled around, and the second grade team was no exception. With the news filtering through from the centre that we would be batting, some unnamed members of the top order sheepishly attempted to sight a few balls before tackling the no doubt daunting task of the new pill coming down at pace.
After a slow start it was a rapid decent to 5 for 30. On an okay deck it looked like we could be in the field well before tea. With most of the top order back in the sheds early for the second week straight, the boys have spent a fair amount of time getting to know each other. This consist of rig running us all through his dismissal and his post dismissal blow up, chat regarding his social activities, a few dusty jokes from Les, more chat from rig regarding his dismissal and potential hundred if he was still out there, and that is as far as we get.
Theo steadied the ship and, joined by culky they set about putting on a great partnership. Theo looked great, eventually falling for 92. Culky looked amazing from ball 1, and went on to make a flawless ton. Joined by Tim Ley, who scored a great half century, Culky continued to punish the Parramatta bowling, and by the end of the days play we finished on a solid 351. It is a testament to the strength of the side that we put on such a great score after being 5-30, and with much of the top order yet to fire there is still plenty of room for improvement in the finals.
Week 2
Terrible day for a Pepsi all over Sydney, as the weather man got it horribly wrong and it was plus 30 and humid. The old guys were paying $13.45 for the win in nash, but somehow managed to put together a rare win. Poor keeping by Nick Larkin has led to calls from some in the team for the purchase of a cardboard cut out to be placed in the goals next week as a more effective measure for the young blokes to stop a few in front of the goals.
The deck had a bit in it in the first session, with both Timmy and Culks getting good carry and bounce. After a stunning innings last week, culky dominated play for the first two hours grabbing seven poles. The return of rig into the bowling attack also boosted the boys. After struggling to even register on the speed gun for his first over or two, rig eventually got the ball at least halfway through to the keeper and managed to snare a wicket.
Crowls was covered in dust on arrival to the ground kind regards the Vet faculty, and struggled to wipe it off during the warm off. In a testament to his skill and a few gruelling AUG campaigns, he kept beautifully and bagged 5 catches. The first innings win was secured after lunch, and with plenty of over’s left in the day an outright was certainly on the cards.
The second innings was always going to be difficult with the pitch baked. Culky and Timmy again spearheaded the attack each grabbing an early wicket. Some solid batting on a now good pitch made the going tough for the units. Dave Miller applied some wd40 to the shoulder and got a wicket with his first ball. Ask Milf and he will tell you it was shaping away off a good length, but the reality is somewhat different. It is good to see Milf with the ball back in hand after a long stint away from trundling. With the number of over’s dwindling and with Parramatta still having four wickets in hand, Theo called it a day.
It was a great effort to score plus 350 and take 16 wickets, and the signs look positive for second grade coming into the finals. Mention must go to Culky for such a dominate performance.
SYDNEY UNI- 6 dec 282 (Kazaglis 75, Peacock 50 not out, Khongwar 26, Glynne 34.
PARRAMATTA 5/32 (Poologas 2/2, Glynne 2/2)
The true home of 5th grade cricket welcomed the students back home for the first time in 2010. The morning started off with a shortened game of nashball. The contest saw city vs country as decided by N.Burke. The game was a demolition, as the city boys never felt in danger of victory.
The silver fox aka James Rodgers lost the toss and, the Parra captain sent the students in on a green deck which we new would seem around quiet early. The openers Chris “i just might chop someone’s head off with this bat” Davey and Jim “the sweat master” Kazaglis took the field, George Michael aka Davey fell for 11 within the first ten and enter Aaron “the gentleman” Khongwar. While Kags (75) and our favourite lad King Khongwar (36), put on 110 before tea plenty was taking place off the field which little we knew about our youngster in the team... one Aaron Khongwar. Little did we know, he was many talents other than one. Not only is he a Year 12 student, a cricketer, he can dance (sorry shuffle/gabba) like no other and rap/sing as his youtube debut for one love rap dedication to his missus titled “I Love You”. Dribble D as he is known in the rap world also enjoys a Woodstock or two and a smell of Playboy deodorant wafts from no other than his cricket kit. Going un-noticed here was a great batting performance by Kags who had to leave at tea and The Camel which set up the innings for those coming in. Nick Jerk Burke and James “has no voice from O-Week’ Walsh unfortunately were dismissed in single digits. Virosh “ the Pool Boy” Poologas+Alphabet and Jim “Nigel Cowell” Carey put on 20ish each after a splendidly served tea, which differs amazingly from a lonesome serving of donuts and more donuts at Richmond previously. Nigel has thoroughly enjoyed his stay in 5s, showing off his 1st grade cap, which the opposing scorer picked up and been quoted with such lines as “Metro, can you just get on your knees”. Ah anyway, runs began to flow when Ben “soon to wed” Peacock and your scribe put on 60 odd from overs 52-61. Benny batted well to get 50 while his fellow partner who attempts to think he now is a bowling all-rounder, got there fair share of luck and bad balls which could be put away to allow J.Rodgers to declare after the 61st over at a healthy 7/285.
This left the good guys 17 overs at the Parra which Glynne and Metro “i don’t care I can swear in front of the Parra female scorer”, Virosh Pooly got amongst the poles to leave the opposition at 5/32 at stumps on day one. Fingers crossed the threatened rain during the week doesn’t dampen chances of a hopeful win to the students. GG.
SYDNEY UNIVERSITY-7 (dec) / 285
PARRAMATTA 1ST- 48 (V Poologas 4/2, A Glynne 3/11, J Kazaglis 2/10) & 6/204 (J Rodgers 2/19, G Metcalfe 2/42)
With torrential rain falling consistently the night previously, a warm autumn day at St Pauls was exactly what the doctor ordered. With Parramatta being 5/32 overnight, the uni boys had a lot of confidence in producing a quick 6 points into a possible outright. Nash ball again featured the country boogans vs the city cool cats. A rushed game left a nil all draw as attention drew towards executing plans on the field. Jim “dripping” Kazaglis and Gus “definetly not a pig” Glynne resumed bowling . Glynne managed to take a pole, with clean glove work by Benjamin “groom” Peacock which led to Kazaglis and Virosh “Your number one pool boy” Poolgasandram (i got it all this week) wrapping up a 1st innings win within 20 overs of day 2 play.
This left the students with a further 60 overs to have the possibility of gaining a sneaky outright which would have become more than handy in retaining a spot in the top 6. With Mr Punishmenet again opening the batting and his youngster who probably thought of killing himself at the change of overs got away to a start, however the bowling change of Greg “Chris Martin/DK Lillee/who ever else wears a headband to bowl” Metcalfe led to our first break through with a signature LBW. Runs where drying up like Walshy’s mouth in need of rum while the 2nd (spec catch by Kags), 3rd and 4th wickets feel in 10 over intervals which continued to frustrate the students. Rodgers was pick of the bowlers in the situation with 3 important wickets, as we knew when one wicket feel the rest would follow and drop like flies. Unfortunately after 80 overs in the field, six points was all htat the students could take which were still crucial in gaining a finals appearance. Next week is Gordon who are sixth (51 points) and 2 only points ahead of us, with Sutherland in between on 50 and North Sydney on 52. A win and a bonus point could get us there in charge through Saturdays and Sundays in March. Bring on next Saturday at Pauls.
GG.
