PG's Victorious
Family and supporters. This is how a club should be!
Sydney University today won its second premiership of the season when our Poidevin Gray side defeated Hawkesbury by 6 wickets in the Grand Final at Owen Earle before 50 rousing supporters who travelled to Richmond to cheer on the boys. While a great team performance, Liam Robertson won the Shane Lee medal with 3/8 and, 44, and a great catch off Rob Edwards.
Nick Larkin won the toss and sent the previously undefeated Hawkesbury in to bat. Larkin handled his bowlers brilliantly in hot conditions with effective bowling changes, Hawkesbury being dismissed for 86. Sydney Uni lead by a second wicket partnership of 68 by skipper, Nick Larkin 28 and Liam Robertson ensured a comfortable win. It is worth pointing out that in the three finals matches they chased down their opponents losing a total of only eight wickets in those three matches. This follows on from our 1st grade one day championship. Both 1st and 2nd grade play in next week's qualifying finals, with 1st grade already assured of a semi final spot.

10 points to the good guys!
A dominating display against Wests has seen the students pick up 10 points in the second last round of the season. Scott Henry today continued with his fine form with the bat. The same form that floated the students score to lofty heights in the Limited overs final last Sunday.
The bowlers finished Wests off with Greg Mail 4 for 25, Ian Moran 3 for 20, Nigel Cowell 2 for 10 and Beau Casson 1 for 1.
In Second grade the boys won and scored 6 points for their trouble. No real standouts here, just a solid team under the watchful eye of the Big Ship.
Third grade were defeated although the silver lining went to Ken Huckle with 101.
The Fourth grade team were victorious, Jack Hammond batting a perfect 100.
Rounding out the grade report were the Fifth grade team, who showed strength in the bowling attack with Simon Cowell taking 7 for 77. Wests were too strong for us, taking 6 points back to the plains.

Limited overs Victory
SUCC bagged their first limited overs premiership in a hard hitting clash against Manly.
"Man of the match" Scott Henry
Man of the match was the quiet achiever, Scott Henry. Scott hit 74 runs off 92 deliveries. His contribution to the game helped the students achieve a total that was just beyond Manly's grasp.
I spoke with Captain Will Hay after the initial jubilation cooled and found that there is a lot more to this man than meets the eye. Listen to the interview about the game as well as his vision for the club as we head towards the Belvidere Cup.
Photos of the match have now been uploaded, Click here to view.

More milestones
Greg Mail passed two new milestones at Manly Oval on Sunday. By taking his tally of runs for the season to 1007, he became the first player in the history of the Sydney First Grade competition to pass 1000 runs in a season on four separate occasions.
And by taking his career tally to 11,391 runs he became the fifth-highest run-scorer in the 118 year history of the competition. At Manly he passed Rod ("Log") Bower, who hit 11,378 runs at an average above 40 between 1977 and 1991.
I never knew how Log acquired his nickname and it was probably best not to ask - cricketers' nicknames in those days tended to be Not Safe For Work. But in a Bankstown team that contained the Waughs and Test batsman Steve Smith, Bower was the one who could really hurt you, usually by launchng the ball into that smelly canal outside Bankstown Oval. He had a square, two-eyed stance that suggested that he could only hit through midwicket, but he hit eveywhere else, too. Hard. He had stints with Penrith and Balmain and played 13 first-class matches for NSW.
Ian Moran's dismissal of Tim Cruickshank gave him his 294th First Grade wicket for the club, taking him past Peter James (293), the club's outstanding fast-medium bowler of the 1960s and 1970s. Ian is now the club"s third highest wicket taker in Firsts, behind Mick O'Sullivan and John Grimble. As Ian also took six wickets for Petersham-Marrickville, Cruickshank was his 300th wicket in First Grade.
Scott Henry, who has had an impressively consistent season, has passed 1000 runs in First Grade for the club.

Day one SUCC v Wests
Highest scores today Mail 20, Moran 22, Henry 20, Farday 21, N. Larkin 16 no. Will Hay declared at 124 and sent Wests in to bat their second innings. At stumps Wests were 2 for 8.
I had a chat with John Kilford, the 1st grade scorer at the end of the game. Click here to listen in.
In second grade we were all out for 208 with Wests 3 for 32. Wests bowler Parmakellis achieved a 5 for.
Third grade, Wests all out at 341, Jimmy Kazaglis took 7 for 89. Two of the western suburbs boys batted over 100, Captain G. Seymor 137 and M. Starc 111. The students are on 0/48 in reply.
Fourth grade, Wests all out for 151, wickets taken 3 a piece by Cull, Foulis and McLean. The good guys are on 2/119 with Jack Hammond not out on 74, assisted by Ed Arnott on 24 at stumps on day 1.
Fifth grade, All out for 178, Alex Barwick top scored at 57. Wests looking dangerous 0/47 at stumps.

Coach's Wrap
Well folks,
Not quite the Blue and Gold wash but an acceptable result v Randwick- Petersham 3 from 5 and with a bit of luck could have been top 4 from 5.
1st grade,
Resuming on the second day RP added another 30 runs to be all out for 253 Ian (Scotty) Moran claiming the final two and figures of 3 for 35. SU had little trouble chasing lead by our Capt. Will Hay (106*) Scotty Moran (53) a solid double with bat & ball and Scoot Henry (66*) a job well done. 11 points clear of second & two rounds to go before the finals. Very Solid Performance UNI boys.
2nd grade,
SU took their total to 242 on the start of the second day and then went about taking 10 RP wickets on a very flat pitch. Ben (chick magnet) Joy 3/39, Shashi (Sherpa) 2/31 off 17 bowled well with match winner Liam (stinker) Robertson demanding Theo to bowl him, delivering 3/29. RP all-out 204. The Big Ship and the crew have now moved into 3rd in the comp and on course for something special. Excellent WIN boys.
3rd grade,
Defending 184 on a flat track and a quick outfield was always going to take a some doing. RP got off to a rapid start with our bowlers having trouble building pressure. But to the boys credit they hung in and slowly chipped away at the oppositions batting. Ken Huckle 4/24 came on and weaved his magic with a high quality spell, his swing/seam almost getting the lads home. RP 9/185. Again the Uni boys never gave up and showed what spirit we have at our club. Heart breaking for the boys lets win our last two and we may sneak in to the top 6.
4th grade,
RP continued on the 2nd day adding another 40 to be all out 160. Sam Mahabady claimed last 2 batsman and finish with his consecutive Michelle Phiefer’s in 2 matches (5/47). SU began their chase and only the skip Simon Cowan (26) contributing in our top order. Jarrod (I will get u there) Waterlow 26 n/o & Sam Mahadaby 22 n/o got the UNI boys home with a solid 8th wicket 50 run partnership . SU 7/161 gutsy win boys.
5th grade,
0/9 resuming the second day chasing 123 a great opportunity to get the job done, SU all-out 82 only Charlie Arcus (25) , no.10 Ronit Lotliker and no.11 Tom Coles showing any fight. Very Poor effort the lack of application by our batsman is a concern.
6th grade SU 5/281 (Leopard 80 Pryke 60 odd not) drew against a defensive Wests 8/181 Harry de Kresta 3 poles.
1st grade semi SU v Randwick Petersham at Coogee.
Will Hay won the toss and batted on a good wicket and very quick outfield, the early loss of Nick (seagull ) Larkin brought the experienced pair of Greg Mail (64 off 75balls) and Ian Moran (85 off 84 balls) together. The pair took the score from 1/13 to 2/133, the loss of Will Hay (3/145) not troubling the scorers slowed our momentum but Scott Henry and Ian continued to bat aggressively before Ian was out with the score reaching 4/175.
Mark (ALF) Faraday (43 off 32 balls) and Scooter Henry (66 off 62 balls) put together a dominating stand of 80 before Alf fell to a forward diving catch at long on. SU 5/256, the tail got SU to 9/288 at the end of our 50 over’s. With conditions favoring batting defending was not going to be easy and with Simon Katich in their lineup we needed to be on our game. Nigel Cowell bowling really good areas and securing an early break through Ian his consistent self support him with the new ball. Enter Kat (75) a class act & well supported by the hard hitting Daniel Wall (77) RP where looking well set 1/162. Liam (Stinker) Robertson got the vital wicket of Kat caught well by TK at cover and then Josh (JT) Toyer cleaned up the Wall with RP now 4/164, a huge shift in momentum. Scotty then came back to do what he does best bowl in pressure situations. He claimed Adam Coyte, Nathan Price and the danger man Adam Semple (49 off 32 balls) leaving RP 7/276 a win to SU by 12 in a high quality match. Apart from a couple of ground fielding errors the group put on a fantastic display of out- cricket under pressure.
Next Sunday V Manly at Manly be there to support the lads.

Milestones
A few words about Sid Carroll. Not a household name in cricket today, but many good judges of the game used to say that Carroll would have been an outstanding Test batsman, if only he could have got a game for New South Wales. Carroll was an opening batsman by preference, but at times during his career NSW took the field with four men (Arthur Morris, Sid Barnes, Jim Burke and Jack Moroney) who had opened for Australia. Carroll could bat in the middle order, too, but that meant winning a spot ahead of Keith Miller, Neil Harvey, Richie Benaud, Bob Simpson and Norm O'Neill. The upshot was that, although Carroll's appearances for his State were spread over 15 years (between 1945 and 1959), he managed only 46 games in that time (in which he scored 2811 runs at 39.59). His reward for scoring his maiden first-class hundred was to be dropped for the next match, when Moroney returned from Test duty.
All of that gave Carroll plenty of time to play for Gordon. Between 1939 and 1966, Carroll hit 11,314 First Grade runs at an average of 35.36. He was, until yesterday, the sixth-highest run-scorer in the history of the First Grade competition.
Probably by now you've worked out where this is going. Greg Mail's 64 in the Limited-Overs semi-final against Randwick-Petersham took him to 11,358 First Grade runs, and into sixth place. In fact, he's only 21 runs behind Bankstown's formidable Rod ("Log") Bower, who sits in fifth place - so watch this space. It has become almost routine this season to watch Greg climb past other exceptional players on his way towards the top of this list, but we shouldn't lose sight of what a remarkable achievement this is. Incidentally: Greg is also only 26 runs away from becoming the only player in the history of the First Grade competition to reach 1000 runs in a season on four occasions.

PG's blitz Dragons in qualifying final
Just on 2 hours was all it took for the students to send the Dragons back to the sheds. Captain Nick Larkin won the toss and decided to field making the most of heavy overhead conditions, dismissing St.George for 71 runs in 31.1 overs. The destroyer in the attack was Chris Withers (pictured) with an astounding 5/13. The rest of the bowlers took the balance of wickets.
The students took to the paddock with bat in hand where Nick Larkin steadied the team with a personal score of 34 off 49, still standing at the close of the game with his younger brother James who incidentally managed the second highest run tally of 15 off 23 for the boys. 1 hour and 11 minutes, 17.4 overs and back to the sheds for the club victory song, "Did we win? we ......."

Weekend rapt
Looking good for a Blue & Gold wash v Randy Petes. next Sat.
Day 1 scores.
5th grade
SU skip Paul Bertelle won the toss & with bowler friendly conditions elected to bowl. His bowlers supporting his decision by executing their skill of swingers and cutters plus excellent leg spin dismissing RP for 122 in 40.4 over’s.
Josh Lawrence (5/21) found form with his RA meds and new recruit leg spinner Ronit (Ronnie) Lotliker (4/28) has now taken 7 in his first 2 grade matches. EXCELLENT PROSPECT.
Paul (social light) Bertelle has mentioned that his young team will deliver next sat at Pauls.
4th grade
SU won the toss and Simon Cowan decided to ask RP to bat. Again overcast conditions assisting pace bowling, Elliott Braunstein (3/20), Sam Mahabady (3/30) & Devon Foulis (2/12) another new recruit who has taken 11 wckt @ 12 striking every 20 balls in 3 grade matches (VERY GOOD PROSPECT). Both Elliott and Sam have also had late season success and with RP 8/115 our quicks should complete the job and allow batters to chase down the RP total.
Simon assures me that his team is good for positive outcome at Petersham oval.
3rd grade
RP captain won the toss and on a green top No.2 plus heavy overhead clouds sent SU into bat. A gutsy SU effort on a difficult pitch we battled to 9/171 AJ Grant (40) and a hard hitting 29 n/o from our number 11 Kerrod (BOMBER) Macpherson has given us a good chance to compete. Wardy (Daniel) is confident given similar conditions of the pitch we can mount a good defence playing tough discipline cricket.
2nd grade
BIG SHIP (Adam Theobald) won the toss and batted. MG (Matt Gregory) an early casualty not troubling the scorers, then the SHIP along with Ben (CHIP) Larkin built a 62 run partnership before Ben miss read a slower ball and was catch at mid on. SU 2/65.
Liam (Stinker) Robertson (3) and Adam (47) where both back in the pavilion and SU 4 down for 79, Justin Younes (56)and Matt Morgan (53n/o) put on a excellent stand of 93 before Justin (614 runs @ 41) was out. Rob Edwards 16 n/o (243 runs @40 plus 20wickets) has joined Matt (569 runs @ 41) SU 5/207 and the plan from the BIG SHIP is to add another 75 to 100 as quickly as possible then GAME ON at Coogee next Sat.
1st grade
Will Won the toss and sent RP in and was rewarded with two early wickets RP 2/21, Cowell (1/37) & Moran (1/31). RP add 31 before Scott Henry pulled of a superb run out of Adam Coyte (230n/o last round) side on direct hit. G Mail (3/23) delivered a couple blows and RP now 5/67 but a solid 72 run partnership arrested some of SU,s momentum. TK (2/29) and Maily again making a vital breakthrough RP 8/156.
Missed an opportunity to close out their innings, missed chances did not help our cause and also a more aggressive plan with our quicks should have seen them bowled out. With RP 8/223 a couple of early success next Sat, SU have the batting to chase down RP total.
PG Qualifying Semi v St George (see Scorecard attached)
St George all-out 71(C Withers 8.1 over’s 3 maidens 5 for 13) lost to SU 3/72 capt. Nick Larkin 34n/o (784 runs @ 44) and James Larkin 16n/o play Penrith in semi 6th March at Howell Oval
Very clinical display.

Mr. 6 for 22
"Target locked".
After a week of touring in SA, Chris Withers has returned in fantastic form taking 8 wickets in a strong second grade win against Bankstown.
Sporting a new and improved run-up, Chris started the day well as he claimed the first two Bankstown wickets early. Despite the 40 degree heat, he was precise and consistent. He led the second grade attack, making the best of everything the wicket had to offer.
He finished his first innings haul with two wickets in as many balls. He didn’t stop there, taking 2 of the 3 wickets in Bankstown’s second innings. A timely show of form as we approach the business end of the season.
Ben Larkin also had a fantastic game. Ben managed his maiden grade 100, leading our chase with a chanceless 105. He was helped along the way with some quality batting from the returning Matt Gregory (45), Matt Morgan (54) and Rob Edwards (48no). SUCC managed 7 (dec) for 304 before sending Bankstown back in for a brief bowl. Another promising game leading up to the business end of the season.

WATCHING ... AT THE UNIVERSITY OVALS
By James Rodgers
Wandering past No. 2 Oval, I realise that only six of the 4th Graders on the field would know who I am. Fitzgerald and Harrington I once taught and coached in classrooms and on school fields and then played beside on university fields. Today, Harro makes a welcome reappearance in University colours, 21 months since his last Grade game.
Down on No. 1 Oval, a frustrating Sutherland last wicket stand continues merrily through bowling changes, field adjustments, tactical manouvres. Kierath is pulled; Robertson hauled twice through covers - once to the left and once to the right of Younes. Keshar is on driven for a mighty six to the base of the western hill. Joy and Edwards are spent but, eventually, Withers returns and induces an edge to Crowley. 197 all out.

They don't like cricket, they love it

Sydney University Cricket Club hosted America’s only all born US cricket team, Compton Cricket Club, in a Twenty20 friendly at Sydney University Oval No. 2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Compton Cricket Club, a team of young men from central Los Angeles, visited the campus as the first stop on their 11 day exhibition cricket tour of Australia.
The club emerged fifteen years ago as a way to remove Los Angeles youth off the streets.
Its founder Ted Hayes, said the club has used the values of sportsmanship and focused on the importance of etiquette and fair play in cricket to help players develop respect for authority, a sense of self-esteem, and self-discipline.
There was plenty of self discipline as the teams batted out the Twenty20 match in sweltering heat.
The home side were victorious reaching the target of 128 with a two overs and five wickets in hand.
The visitors demonstrated great enthusiasm, particularly in the field, chasing every ball hard and taking some great catches, supporting each other with good mateship.
With Hayes leading the rap comments on the field, it was a whole lot of fun, despite the mid thirties temperatures.
The teams joined each other at the end of the match for lunch to complete an enjoyable day.
“It‘s not often you get an opportunity to host this type of event,” said umpire on the day and Sydney University Cricket Operations Manager Geoff De Mesquita.
“The day was fantastic, with our team playing the match in the right spirit and I can assure you proving great ambassadors for Sydney University.
We were pleased to be part of this initiative and also to be able to promote the game of cricket in this way and to promote Sydney University.”
The Compton team has acquired an international following not just for their skills with the bat, but also for their musical prowess.
Last year the team released the world’s first Hip-Hop Cricket Rap Music Video and were invited to demonstrate their musical skills at the World Bar at Kings Cross on Tuesday evening.
“The Homies” are the first Cricket team from North America to tour to Australia.
They have planned to play a series of high profile exhibition cricket matches in Melbourne, Alice Springs and Sydney.

Justin Younes, the quiet achiever
This young batsman has all the qualities required to make an excellent cricketer. Justin joined the club last season after leaving St.George. The HSC hampered his commitment to cricket back then. Although, now that he is a university student studying hard, he appears more relaxed and determined in the game. Scoring 103 not out in round 10, followed by 54 in the last round, this youngster displays maturity beyond his years.

Sam Kumar scores 98 runs in Metropolitan Cup
Requiring 275 to win the boys arrived at St Pauls looking forward to the chase. Even Dave Gatt arrived and then had to make the long trip out to Sutho to play for 5th grade. A steady start by Brendan Pryke and Michael Barwick set the platform for Sam Kumar to launch a blitz on the Bankstown attack - amassing 98 runs in the hour session before tea, with horns-a-plenty, even smashing 24 runs off the opening bowler! Unfortunately the tea break disrupted the flow of runs and made the result more interesting in the end, as Uni crawled to their successive 1 wicket win. Read more in the match report section later on.

Australia Day Finals
Sydney University Cricket Club would like to congratulate the winning teams from yesterday's finals held at Blacktown Olympic Park.
Wests were represented in the final for Green shield and Twenty20 which is a commendable result but failed to bring home the trophies.
Bankstown dominated the Green Shield competition throughout the year, undefeated. The result was convincing with Bankstown batting first achieving 232. Wests all out for 91. Damien Mortimer from Bankstown had a stunning 5/3. Bankstown won the Green Shield comp last year as well.
Sydney defeated Wests in the Twenty20 final under lights in a game that was even until the last couple of overs. Result was Sydney batted first 142, Wests were 131 after their 20 overs.

The day that Charlie culled the Sharks
The usually quite and gentle Mr. Cull unleashed an attack against the hapless Sutherland team yesterday in the 4th grade game at Uni number 2. Charlie stripped 7 wickets from the opposition for a loss of only 49 runs. Rumors had it that he was told that if he could achieve a 5 for on the weekend, his cricket career's chances of improvement would be justified. Maybe selectors should whisper this form of encouragement to a few more bowlers?
I took Charlie aside at stumps to ask him about his amazing day. He is quite a humble character, but obviously there is a lion just below the surface that loves to get into the attack.

Cricket NSW to donate gate receipts to Queensland Flood Relief Appeal
Cricket NSW will donate all gate receipts from its KFC T20 Big Bash match against Queensland at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 29 January to the Queensland Flood Relief Appeal.
Cricket NSW Chief Executive David Gilbert urged fans to turn out in force for the match to support the appeal: “The match against Queensland on Saturday 29 January provides a wonderful opportunity for cricket fans to show their support for those affected by the devastating floods. All gate receipts from this match will be donated to the flood relief appeal. The greater the attendance, the more money that will be raised.”
ANZ Stadium has shown immediate support by agreeing to waive all event costs for the match. Stadium Managing Director Daryl Kerry said: "The news and footage we're seeing from South East Queensland is heartbreaking and we applaud Cricket NSW on this initiative. Waiving event costs means every single dollar raised through ticket sales will be donated to those who need it most. For a great night out and a fantastic cause, let's band together in a huge show of support."

Green Shield win a thriller at Pratten Park
It is fair to say Uni did not get off to the best start with the bat and were 3/17 in the early stages. A couple of good partnerships in the middle order, and a wag of the tail, saw Uni reach a degree of respectability and a total 9/142 after 60 overs. Wests made a solid start and were cruising at 0/76. The sugar fix at the afternoon tea break gave the boys the lift they needed. A couple of quick wickets were taken after the break and it was obvious the boys felt they had a sniff. Buoyed by the support of the ‘Fanatics’ from St Patricks Strathfield, the bowlers found some extra pace and the intensity lifted in the field. Next thing we knew Wests were 7 down, 8 down, 9 down. The equation at this point was 55 overs bowled - Wests needing 6 runs and Uni 1 wicket. It then moved to Wests needing just 3 runs for the win. The final wicket came with captain, Jesse Moffat, clean bowling the no. 9 batsmen.
It was great to finish on a winning note and see the smiles all round.

Canteen in overdrive.
When Matt Morgan and Stuart McLean play at Sydney University on the same date, be prepared for some amazing service from the canteen.
Both of these player's mothers pride themselves with competent food prep and service skills and usually have the canteen as well as Geoff to themselves to command at will. Saturday was an exception of mammoth proportions. Not only were these two canteen "Commander in Chiefs" maning the counter, Helen also put to work the relatives from near and far that were visiting over the Christmas holidays.

Image shows Geoff being congratulated on exceptional counter service by 3rd grade Dad, Jeff Hill.

3rd grade match report
The first 20/20 match of the year saw the students continue on their winning ways, disposing of Gordon in a disciplined fashion. The early morning festivities saw the International’s easily dispose of the Aussies, much the same way the summer of cricket has gone this year. The arrogance ...more here

Thrilling day at Sydney University.
Saturday saw us host 3 games. 1st grade dominated Gordon in a limited overs match with Nick Larkin falling just short of a century, Greg Mail playing to his usual standard adding a valuable 84 runs and the best of the bowlers being Michael Culkoff 3/32.
3rd grade played a twenty20 match at 10.00 am also achieving a positive result for the club. Ash Cowan and Suda Sivapalan adding 48 runs a piece. As for the bowlers, Stuart McLean attracted my camera lens on the day.
5th grade played a very entertaining game of twenty20 with Captain Paul Bertelle showing incredible form with the ball. Paul took a wicket midway through the game, his next delivery saw an amazing one handed catch on the boundary but unfortunately the fielder was in the air over the rope and landed outside the field of play. Next delivery another wicket, Paul being robbed of a hat trick. Paul's next delivery was uneventful but the following delivery saw yet another Gordon batsman make the long walk to the sheds. Paul ended up with 4/16. Alex Logan was the best of the bats with 34.

More Milestones
Not quite as unusual as Greg Mail's 11,000 runs, but some highly creditable efforts from the weekend.
* When Stuart Clark dismissed Callum Ferguson of South Australia at North Sydney Oval, he claimed his 200th wicket in "List A" one-day matches.
* Nigel Cowell's 3-39 at Waverley Oval was his best analysis in First Grade.
* Ed Arnott's unbeaten 57 in Fourth grade was his highest score for the club. He shared a matchwinning partnership with John Saint, whose 62 was his best score in Fourth Grade for the Club, mostly because this was his first match in Fourth Grade for the club. John might have played Fourth Grade for Penrith about 25 years ago: searches through old and dusty record books continue.
* Danny Ward has passed 2000 runs for the club.

Milestones
Congratulations to Greg Mail, who yesterday became the seventh player in the history of the sydney First Grade competition to reach 11,000 runs. He did it in some style, too, reaching his 33rd First Grade century in the process.
Sharp-eyed and numerate readers of this site will have noticed some discrepancies in Greg's reported tally of runs from time to time this season. The confusion arises from the fact that the SCA initially determined that runs in last season's Twenty20 competition did not count as First Grade runs, but apparently later reversed that decision - the effect of which was to add 24 runs to Greg's total.
Anyway. On either analysis, Greg sailed past the milestone yesterday. The six players who head the run-scoring list are Greg Hayne (12,354), Warren Bardsley (12,116), Richard Chee Quee (11,874), Tommy Andrews (11,703), Rod Bower (11,379) and Sid Carroll (11,314). Greg now has 11,117 First Grade runs. In fact, eight players have now scored 11,000 runs because Paul Maratziotis of Blacktown began the day needing 20 runs to get there, and hit 43 not out in the afternoon. It's remarkable that only eight players have reached this landmark in 117 years of Grade cricket, but two of them achieved it on the same day.
Greg's century - which places him fourth on the list of First Grade century-makers, behind only Warren Bardsley (36), Victor Trumper (36) and Bob Simpson (35) - was a superbly constructed innings: at first, he gave muted support to Ian Moran, who was in great touch: then he held the innings together as his middle-order partners came and went; and in the final few overs, he took the bowling apart. His 145 came from 138 deliveries and included four sixes.

Milestones
Do people remember Phil Marks? Universally known as "Skid", he was a platinum blond all-rounder, born in Zimbabwe, who played 13 first-class matches for NSW in the 1980s. He would have played more, I suspect, but for the fact that, as a batsman who bowled lively medium pace, he was competing for a spot with two young all-rounders named Waugh. Anyway, he had a highly distinguished First Grade career, first for Manly, then briefly for the club then known as Balmain, and finally as captain of a memorably aggressive North Sydney side. Between 1979 and 2001, he scored 10,935 runs in First Grade at an average of 35.15 - making him the seventh highest run-scorer in the competition's history.
Well, as of today, he's the equal seventh-highest run-scorer in the competition's history, because Greg Mail's unbeaten 61 against Fairfield-Liverpool has taken him to exactly 10,935 runs. The six players who head the list are Greg Hayne, Warren Bardsley, Richard Chee Quee, Tommy Andrews, Rod Bower and Sid Carroll. No predictions are offered here, but it is entirely possible that Greg will overhaul one or two more of them before the end of the season.

Bitter sweet results from Sunday's Twenty20 matches
Pg's win in nail biter
118 to chase down doesn't sound like a big target. That is of course if you are playing in an ordinary game of cricket. Needing to score 119 to win a Twenty20 match is a whole other ball game!
Nick Larkin 20, Matt Morgan 24 and Dave Miller 20 looked to have the team on target with a result for the students apparently in the bag. The following 3 bats failed to achieve double figures. Then enter a steadying batsman by the name of Charlie McKeith who struck 18 off 20 deliveries. Tension rippled through the spectators as Charlie lost his wicket half way through the second last over with only 5 runs needed. With a handful of bowlers equipped with bats, their wickets tumbled quicker than a space shuttle re-entry. Into the arena strode one Kerrod McPherson. Nervous mutters of doubt regarding Kerrod's batting ability were soon turned to shouts of joy as Kerrod punished the first delivery to him with a beautiful drive that sent the ball over the bowler's head and crashing into the boundary fence.

1st grade middle order collapse in Twenty20
Ian Moran and Mark Faraday set a scorching pace in the chase for 151 runs clocking up 69 runs from 38 deliveries. Stuart Clark, Scott Henry and Will Hay managed 17 runs between them off 26 deliveries. After Scott Henry left the paddock, Captain Will Hay remained to witness a tragedy as it slowly unraveled before his eyes. Ben Larkin didn't get to face a single delivery, being run out for a diamond duck. Nick Larkin and Kev Desai went for golden ducks giving Parramatta a team hat trick. James Crowley with his powerful guns assisted his skipper only to be given a dubious LBW at 9 runs. Tom Kierath added 2 more runs before being run out in a desperate attempt to wring a few more from a game that I'm sure the boys would like to forget.

Greg Mail's 74 against Sydney took him past 500 First grade runs for the season. He has 514 so far, well ahead of second-placed Jarrad Burke of Bankstown, who has 338. Also on Saturday, Greg became the eighth highest run-scorer in the history of Sydney First Grade cricket, moving past the only other current player in the top ten, Blacktown's veteran Paul Maratziotis. Maratziotis scored only 10 on Saturday, taking his tally to 10,852, whilst Greg now sits on 10,874 career runs in First Grade (having given Maratziotis, a fine player, seven seasons start).
Elsewhere, unfortunately, there wasn't much to report. Shashi Keshar's fighting knock of 33 in Seconds was his highest score for the club. Michael Barwick (143*) also hit his highest score for the Club in Fifth Grade's unlucky draw.

Mark Cameron, 11-52 in Sheffield Shield at GABBA
As I write, Mark Cameron is currently bowling to Queensland’s tail enders in their second innings, on the second day of the Sheffield Shield match at The Gabba. This is Mark’s return to Sheffield Shield cricket after being out injured last season.
Queensland were dismissed in the first innings for 75, with Mark taking a career best of 6/22 and capturing his 50th 1st class wicket. In their 2nd innings, Queensland are currently 8/67. Mark has taken 5/27. With two wickets to fall, Mark has 11/49 for the match.
On behalf of the Club, well done Mark on a fantastic effort.
Update:- Mark took 11-52 for the match.

Mark Cameron 6-22
Not a bad morning's work for Mark Cameron in Brisbane. In knocking over Queensland for only 75 in the Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba, he claimed both his best analysis (6-22) and his 50th wicket in first-class cricket. James Hopes was the 50th victim of Mark's first-class career. For good measure, he then removed Wade Townsend for a duck as Queensland followed on.

Theobald and Keshar dominate in 2nd grade
Adam Theobald partnered 4 other SUCC batsmen in a huge display of skilled play at Hurstville Oval yesterday. His wicket lost when he was bowled by David Yon at 112 runs.
When it was the Students turn to bowl, Shashi Keshar was sending down deliveries that were virtually unplayable sending 6 St.George batsmen back to the sheds. Sharshi took 6/47. The real star of the game was Shashi. He came on when we were under pressure, and changed the game. He instantly made an impact, taking a wicket on his second delivery. He bowled with confidence and soon took the wicket of the St George century maker; a crucial wicket.
Shash was bowling the last over with St George needing 15 for a win. They managed to get to 1 run behind our total for the final delivery. Shash stood tall and with the assistance of Morgs managed to take his 6th wicket via stumping, giving us a one run victory.

Mail Mayhem
1 hour and 13 minutes was all it took the students to account for the Dragon's 108 all out. Greg Mail made his presence felt in the morning with 4 for 18. He was assisted by Michael Culkoff 2/18, Josh Toyer 2/26, Scott Henry 1/8 and Nigel Cowell with 1/17. Interestingly, Nigels' 1/17 was from 10 overs, the most economical bowler from the student's attack.
After a bite for lunch, Mail and Hay took to the crease. Mail showing his form belting balls all over the paddock, including 14 fours for a total of 84 before being run out. The students total of 109 off 115 balls proves that SUCC is a force to be reckoned with this season.

The death of F. H. (Sonny) de Carvalho –
Sonny died peacefully early last Friday morning in Newcastle, at the age of 86. He played for the Club with his younger brother, David, in the 1940’s. He then represented Gordon and Northern District before playing in Newcastle in 1st Grade, into his 50’s.
He was a most elegant batsman and a charming companion who retained his affection and great interest in SUCC - of which he was an esteemed Vice President - for the rest of his life. One of his sons, Drew, also played for the Club in the 1970’s.

More fine tuning of our 1st and 2nd grade teams live scores is underway. As we are uploading data via mobile networks, the cost has to be considered. Obviously there will be no movement of data during lunch and tea. Please stick with us on this ground breaking venture.

Records
His tax return may now say "Banker"instead of "Professional cricketer", but it seems to be business as usual for Greg Mail. He began the season with 10,360 First Grade runs, which made him the 15th highest run scorer in the history of Sydney First Grade cricket. After just one weekend of the new season, he has 10,525 runs, so he has moved into 11th place, past Test captain MA Noble (10,383), St George stalwart Warren Saunders (10,400), Test opener Jimmy Burke (10,419) and Randwick batsman Jack Chegwyn (10,455). His century at Mosman was his 18th for the club, extending his own record.
Stuart Clark's second wicket at Mosman on Sunday was his 400th in First Grade cricket (for Sutherland, Manly and University).
Spare a thought for Chris Jones, last season's English import. After hitting 122 for Somerset Seconds against Essex Seconds in August, he was called into the Somerset side to make his first-class debut against Lancashire at Taunton. After he fielded through the first day, he was replaced in the side by Craig Kieswetter, who was released by the England one-day side. So Chris is credited with a first-class appearance, but never made it to the crease. Maybe next season...
